Winterizing Your Lawn, Even When You Don’t Want To

Why unseen winter prep makes a difference you do see in Spring

Everyone wants a lush lawn.  But lush lawns don’t happen overnight.  The key to a beautiful lush, vibrant lawn is what happens before the first blade grows in the spring.  Winterizing your lawn is a necessary step to getting a head start on Spring, and a lush lawn all summer long.

Want a lush, lovely, healthy green lawn come Spring? Start now!  Here’s what you need to do:

Clearing Debris and Mowing:

Grass doesn’t grow well when sticks and debris are lying on top.  Let those blades breathe!  If your lawn isn’t cut short, go ahead and mow it.  Maybe about a third shorter than it is.  (Hire a professional to get it right). Shorter grass is less susceptible to diseases and snow mold during the colder months.

Overseeding:

It's okay, in fact encouraged, to add cold season grass seed to the bare spots in your lawn.  The seed will do its thing in its own time, and the winter snow won’t hurt it.

Fertilization:

Pre-emergent fertilizers prevent weeds from emerging, giving your lawn a head start against the invasive plants when spring arrives. Choose a high-quality, slow-release fertilizer to provide nutrients gradually over the winter months.  Just don’t overdo it.  Call a lawn care professional if you aren’t sure.

Watering:

Did you know watering your lawn is crucial even in colder months? Well-hydrated grass is more resilient to winter stress. If it’s not snowing, your grass will get thirsty over a long winter.

Snow Mold Prevention:

Mold is usually thought of in warm, damp places.  But mold is a common issue in winter, especially in regions like Northern Ohio, with heavy snowfall. To prevent this fungal disease, remove excessive thatch from your lawn, as it provides an ideal environment for mold growth.  Ask a lawn care professional to see if your lawn could also benefit from fungicide to keep it mold-free.

Now, we realize all of this sounds like a lot of work. Especially when you’ve got kids in school, grandkids to visit, or winter naps to take.  But it’s important if you want a lawn to brag about when you go outside in the Spring.
