Get Outside! Early Spring Lawn Maintenance Tips

Eight important projects to take on as soon as the Sun starts shining

What just happened?  All of a sudden, Spring is here!

It happens every year.  January and February turn brutal, and then they turn away just as quickly to make room for March and the beginning of another beautiful Northeast Ohio spring.  If you’re in the Westlake, Rocky River, or West Cleveland vicinity, you know how beautiful it can be.

You also know it can be a lot of work to rehab your lawn from a tough winter and get ready for the new season.  Here at Sollars Landscaping, we’d like to take that burden off of your hands.  Call us, and forget about it!

But maybe you’re just itching to get your hands dirty.  If so, here is a list of the things you’ll want to consider doing now.  The earlier the better!

Clean up:

Fallen leaves, sticks, and leftover debris will hinder early grass growth.  Plus, it just feels good to get the lawn picked up.  You can see an immediate difference, and the grass will thank you.

Aerate the Soil:

This one may not be as easy as clean up, especially if you don’t have the right equipment.  But it’s so important. Aeration allows water to get in and gives the roots room to grow.

Overseed the Lawn:

Adding some seed to bare spots early in spring can make a big difference when the lawn starts to fill out.  If you can, rake the bare soil a bit…but any attention here will help.

Fertilize:

We suggest a professional approach here.  You’ll save money and get better results when an expert fertilizes your lawn the right way, with the right material.  But even if you buy the bags yourself, fertilizing early is key to later success.

Weed Control:

Similar to the above, weed control is best left to the pros.  You might at least choose to spot-treat existing weeds that hung around this winter.

Watering:

Your lawn is thirsty, even after a wet winter season. Don’t overdo it, but make sure that when the grass starts to grow, there is plenty of water to quench the thirst.

Inspect for Pests:

Addressing insects and pests early is key.  Look for birds gathering in spots.  Especially if those spots are brown and growing bare.  Look for holes too, as squirrels, moles, and other pests can do considerable damage.

Mulching:

Mulch makes everything look better.  It’s also helpful for a healthy lawn, regulating soil moisture and temperature, and suppressing weeds.  Sollars Landscaping is available now to deliver and install the right amount of mulch for your best curb appeal and a healthy lawn for the Summer.

So put on a sweatshirt and let’s go outside!  These are just some of the fun things you may or may not be itching to get busy on as Spring comes to life.

But be careful.  Too much or not enough of any of these things can limit your success this Spring.

If you need assistance with lawn maintenance, landscaping, hardscaping, mulch, and more we’re happy to help.  Call Sollars Landscaping today for a lawn service quote.
